Dental Fillings

What are dental fillings?

Dental filling is a treatment where decayed tissue is removed and filling of selected material is done to repair cavities, minor cracks, and chips. Also, if there is a gap between the teeth or a crack in the tooth, dental filling treatment is suggested to prevent future problems by covering the spaces. The gap is covered to protect the teeth from entering bacteria into it. Dental filling is so common these days that most people will need dental filling treatment at least once in their lifetime.

Types of dental fillings

There are two types of fillings in dental treatment: one is direct filling, and the other is indirect filling. The information about the types is given below with the materials used.

Direct fillings

Direct filling is a type of treatment where a dentist fills the cavity and gap in a single visit. Direct filling has a shorter lifespan and is less expensive compared to indirect fillings. The following are the materials used in direct fillings.

Materials for direct fillings

Amalgam

This is a traditional filling used in previous times containing mercury, tin, zinc, and copper. Amalgam filling is a silver-coloured material that is now not used in dental fillings.

Resin composite

Resin composites are in demand because they match the colour of the tooth. This is beneficial as it is less sensitive when you have hot or cold items and is made up of glass, silica, and powdered quartz.

Glass ionomer

This filling is colour-blended to match the tooth colour and is made up of silica glass powder.

Chronic Daily Headaches

Headaches falling into this category happen fifteen days a month or more. Untreated tension headaches or migraines can progress to chronic daily headaches, which can seriously lower the quality of life. Untreated, they could develop into a chronic problem.

Sinus Headaches

Usually brought on by allergies or infections, these happen when the sinuses become irritated. Usually, the forehead, cheeks, and area surrounding the eyes.

Post-Traumatic Headaches

These headaches can linger for months or even years following a head injury or trauma. Depending on the extent and type of the trauma, the pain could resemble a tension headache or migraine.

Indirect fillings

An indirect filling is a treatment where the damage or cavity is highly affected in the teeth to support a direct filling but does not need to place a crown. This cap is made in the lab and then placed in the teeth. There are two types of indirect fillings: inlays and onlays. Inlays refers to the filling of small cavities on the chewing surface, whereas onlays refers to the treatment of filling larger cavities and using caps. The materials used in indirect filling include:

Materials for indirect fillings include

Gold

Gold is recommended because of its strength, durability, and resistance in nature to corrosion and tarnish. The life of gold restorations can last for up to 50 years. Gold filling is more expensive and is considered good value.

Porcelain

Porcelain is another type of indirect filling that is more expensive than direct filling and also stronger. It lasts longer when compared to the other 3 types of direct filling.

Glass ionomer

This filling is colour-blended to match the tooth colour and is made up of silica glass powder.

How do I know if I need filling?

If you are suffering from any kind of pain and having any dental issues, then go for a regular check-up with your dentist. After the check-up, you will be informed by your dentist if you need dental filling treatment or not. Follow your dentist's instructions and get your treatment done on time so that a minor cavity cannot become a serious oral health issue.

Causes

If you are suffering from dental problems like tooth pain, sensitivity, visible holes, and dark staining, then it is a sign that you need a dental filling treatment. The problems also include bad breath, gum swelling, cracked teeth, and other dental problems. Then consult your dentist and adapt to the treatment. When you have pain or sensitivity, consult the dentist first and do not neglect it. Sometimes you will not feel pain but can have other issues like holes, gaps, etc. Instead of avoiding it, get the treatment done.

Procedure

The procedure in direct filling is simple: the decay part is removed from the tooth, and then the process of cleaning the tooth surface is done. Then the filling process is done into the place of the cavity, and the final step of polishing is done to level the surrounding. Whereas in indirect filling, the treatment is done in two sittings. The first dentist removes the cavity, cleans the damaged area, places a temporary filling, and takes an impression. Later in the second slot, the dentist cements the permanent filling into the tooth. The time duration of treatment depends upon the type of filling.

Risks

Dental filling is safe but still has some risks. Sometimes, because of improper work of the dentist or unprofessionalism, the cement and filling would not last for even 1 month. If the dentist cannot fill the gap properly, then it may result in oral health problems. The risk of getting an infection is common, so avoid touching your teeth after the treatment. It is suggested to avoid eating and drinking for some time and brushing for 24 hours after the treatment.

Complications

While going for the treatment, it is important for the patient to have a meal. If the patient is suffering from any health problems or weakness, then it is suggested to postpone the treatment to avoid complications in the future. Get your treatment done on time, or else the complications will increase and it will infect the gums and mouth. Also, leaving the cavities, damaged areas, or open gaps untreated can cause complications in the future. Also, if you don’t have a meal before the treatment, then there is a chance to get fainting or weakness after the treatment. Eating, drinking, or brushing can remove the filling, and the treatment should be done again.

Benefits

The benefits of dental fillings are so clear. It will cure all your dental problems like cavities, gaps, damaged areas, cracked teeth, and other related issues. It will eliminate the chance of getting other oral health issues. Dental filling is a short, simple, and less painful treatment compared to other dental treatments. Also, indirect fillings are stronger and can last longer. This is helpful to cover small holes and cavities in the tooth. Dental filling is less expensive and takes less time to get the treatment done. It will solve all dental issues like pain, bad breath, dark staining, visible holes, sensitivity, etc. You can eat anything after the treatment. Dental filling will comfort you from all the problems and make you smile without any complications.
